What is Cryotherapy and what does it treat?

The CryoPen™ is a FDA and CE registered advanced cryotherapy innovation. It has become the market leader for treating benign skin lesions and imperfections effectively, quickly and safely.

Its high precision pen-like applicator tip delivers a fine pinpoint spray of nitrous oxide whilst ensuring treatments are accurately targeted, without damaging healthy surrounding skin tissue, for improved aesthetic outcomes and a pain-free and easy tolerated experience.

CryoPen freezes the lesion’s inter-cellular fluid, forming ice crystals, which subsequently rupture the cell membrane, destroying the cell. The precise tip helps to greatly reduce the risk of post-treatment hypo-pigmentation, and makes the CryoPen safe for all areas of the face and body, even near the eyes.

Cryopen Procedure

FIRST CYCLE – FREEZE

The cryopen applicator is held as close as possible to the skin lesion but not touching the surface where it releases nitrous oxide. This could be from 5-30 seconds depending  on the size and depth.

THAW

After the first freeze cycle, the tissue is left to thaw for 30 seconds.

SECOND CYCLE – FREEZE

The second freeze cycle will begin. `the tissue will freeze faster than during the first freezing cycle.

Skin Tags

Skin Tags are small skin coloured growths which vary in colour and size.  They are usually found on the neck, armpits, under the breasts, around the groin area and occasionally on the body.

Their appearance can look like warts but they are usually smooth and soft to touch. Some can be more raised and flatter whilst others can grow and dangle on the skin.

Typically they can go in 1 session depending on size then another sesion may be needed.

Cherry Angioma

Cherry Angioma also known as Campbell de Morgan spots are common skin growths which can appear on most areas of your body and are usually found on people aged 30 and older. The broken blood vessels inside a cherry angioma give them a reddish appearance.

They are no cause for concern, unless they bleed or change shape or colour. Cause is unknown, but could possibly be a genetic factor, or linked to pregnancy, chemicals or even climate change and age.

Typically they go in 1 session.

Milia

Small, raised, pearly-white or yellowish bumps on the skin. They are most often seen on the skin around the cheeks, nose, eyes and eyelids, forehead and chest but they can occur anywhere on the body.

Typically go in 1 session.

Solar Lentigines (Age, Sun spots)

Age/sun spots are caused by an excess production of melanin due to skin aging and sun exposure or other forms of ultraviolet light exposure, such as tanning beds. They are most likely to develop on the areas of your skin that receive the most sun exposure, including the face, back of hands, chest, shoulders and forearms.

For the removal of any pigmented areas, only one treatment is typically required using the CryoPen™.

Sebhorroeic Warts

A common skin disorder that is characterized by benign, painless, often wart-like skin lesions that appears to be “stuck” on the skin. The rough, raised spots are usually yellow or brown.

They are usually round although they can appear oval in shape. Some seborrhoeic warts have an irregular shape. Their size can vary from around 1cm to several cm’s in diameter.

We often recommend having these checked by a medical professional before treatment.

Typically go in 1-2 sessions depending on size and depth.

Warts and Verrucas

Warts are raised bumps on your skin which is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Common warts usually grow on the backs of your fingers and toes but can appear on other parts of the body.

They can have a rough grainy feel to them and have a rounded top or can be cauliflower like. Common warts are often greyer than the surrounding skin. Warts can range in size from 1mm to 1cm or even larger and can occur singular or in groups.

Verrucas, (plantar wart) take on the appearance of warts but are flatter because they tend to be found on the feet, where the dermis is thicker.

Occasionally plantar warts grow inward below the surface of the skin and may look like a callus. The typical appearance of a verrucae, is thickened skin on the bottom of the foot, tiny black dots

Shop bought topical preparations such as Wartner and Bazuka for the removal of warts and verrucae use a “slow freeze” principle to destroy the cells. A slow freeze gives the cells time to self-protect themselves, therefore taking a long time to destroy the lesion, if at all.

Warts and verrucas are highly contagious and occur when the virus comes in contact with the skin and causes infection.

Typically go in 1-2 sessions although a further treatment may sometimes be required if the wart is very large or has been present for a few years.

Pre-treatment:

  • Soak for 5 mins every day for one week prior to your appointment
  • Exfoliate or gently file every day, after soaking, for one week prior to your appointment

The Cryopen attacks the cells using a fast freeze (-40 degrees on the lesion in 12 secs), destroying the nucleus therefore removing the lesion as it has not time to protect itself. It is also believed that this process helps the immune system to recognise the virus so that the patient may be less likely to get a verruca again.
